Organophilic clay type
Organophilic clay type: There are many methods for preparing organophilic clay bentonite. The main ones are dry preparation and wet preparation. Organic bentonite clay can also be categorized into easily dispersible organiclay bentonite and pre-gel organo clay bentonite, as well as water-based and oil-based systems. Typically, oil-based bentonite refers to solvent-based organic bentonite.

Below is a detailed explanation of the preparation methods for different types of organic bentonite and a description of each type.
- Dry Organic Bentonite: The most significant feature of dry preparation is that it doesn’t require large amounts of water. This method offers dual benefits by controlling costs and minimizing wastewater. Currently, dry-prepared organic bentonite is frequently used in oilfield drilling muds. The process involves mixing raw montmorillonite with quaternary ammonium salt, typically at a temperature of around 60°C. High temperature and pressure are necessary for this method, enabling ion exchange between cations and clay, thus ensuring good thermal stability and chemical resistance.
- Wet Organic Bentonite: There are various methods for wet preparation of organic bentonite. Initially, high-quality montmorillonite is selected as the raw material, then modified agents are added. The product is then refined through centrifugation, drying, and purification to obtain high-quality organic bentonite. The wet method has a long history and is well-established, but it has high energy consumption and low production capacity. Compared to dry-prepared organic bentonite, wet-prepared organic bentonite exhibits more stable performance.
- Easily Dispersible Organic Bentonite: This type of organic bentonite can be directly added to formulations as a dry powder and achieves high-quality dispersion. Our easily dispersible organic bentonites include CP-10, CP-APA, CP-MPZ, which have excellent dispersibility. These bentonites usually contain surfactants, making them easier to mix and suspend in water.
4, Pre-Gel Organic Bentonite: Pre-gel organic bentonite is designed to enhance dispersion and fully present the properties of organic bentonite. It is mainly used in paints, coatings, inks, and resins. During the pre-gel process, viscosity is the primary metric tested to evaluate performance and adaptability. The concentration determined during this process indicates the suitability of the organic bentonite for various industries.
5,Water-Based Organic Bentonite: Water-based organic bentonite is an inorganic bentonite used in water-based systems such as coatings, inks, or lubricants. It primarily functions as a thickening, rheology, thixotropy, anti-sagging, and anti-settling agent. Our main water-based bentonites include CP-EW and CP-WBS.
- Solvent-Based Bentonite: Solvent-based bentonite is an oil-based bentonite used in oil-based coatings, inks, lubricants, and adhesives. It provides good solubility, thixotropy, anti-settling, and anti-sagging properties. Organic bentonite has strong chemical compatibility, allowing it to mix with various chemical raw materials in the same formulation.
Our solvent-based bentonites include CP-40, CP-10, and CP-APA.
Organic bentonite types are diverse. Besides the types mentioned above, there are others, such as polar organic bentonite, which includes high-polarity, medium-polarity, and low-polarity bentonites. These variations are suitable for different applications and industrial fields.
