Coating raw materials organoclay Bentonite

Coating raw materials organoclay Bentonite CP-34 Organo Modified Bentonite Product Technical & Application Specification
CP-34 is an organo modified bentonite, a rheological additive specially developed for solvent-based systems.
Modified bentonite is widely compatible with solvent systems ranging from low polarity to medium-high polarity. Its application fields cover coatings & inks, oilfield drilling, fracturing fluids, greases, adhesives, cosmetics and other industries.
In the coating industry, solvent-based clay additive serves primarily as a thickener, suspending agent, rheology modifier and thixotropic agent, delivering outstanding anti-settling and anti-sag performance with stable and excellent comprehensive application effects.

1. Basic Physical & Chemical Properties

Coating raw materials organoclay Bentonite CP-34 features stable physical indicators and uniform quality. The specific parameters are listed as follows:
  • Composition: Organic derivative of montmorillonite clay
  • Appearance: Fine, light yellow powder
  • Moisture Content (105โ„ƒ, 2h): โ‰ค3.5%
  • Loss on Ignition (1000โ„ƒ): 28%-30%
  • Bulk Density: 0.53g/cmยณ
  • Fineness (<74ฮผm): โ‰ฅ98%

2. Core Product Advantages of Coating raw materials organoclay Bentonite

With a unique modification process, CP-34 possesses multiple application advantages and is suitable for various coating production and construction scenarios:

  • High gelling efficiency with light-colored and clear gel, which does not affect the transparency of clear coats and light-colored topcoats and avoids haze defects;
  • Delivers stable and reproducible thixotropic consistency over a wide temperature range with strong environmental adaptability;
  • Effectively suspends pigments and fillers and completely prevents hard settling of coating fillers;
  • Significantly reinforces the film structure in organic binder systems and improves the overall protective performance of coating films.
  • Coating raw materials organoclay Bentonite

3. System Selection Guide (Matching Different Coating Systems)

Coating raw materials organoclay Bentonite CP-34 is adaptable to solvent systems with different polarities for targeted selection according to coating system characteristics:

3.1 Low-Polarity Systems

Applicable systems: 200# solvent oil, white oil, aliphatic hydrocarbons, asphalt coatings and alkyd primers. This system requires strictly activated treatment with polar activators. The product cannot swell without activators and will lose all anti-settling effects. Typical applications include anti-rust primers, road marking paints, marine primers and alkyd blended paints.

3.2 Medium-Polarity Systems

Applicable systems: Xylene, trimethylbenzene and aromatic hydrocarbons, including wood coatings, epoxy topcoats and industrial enamel paints. Two applicable methods are available: conventional activation with high cost performance for large-batch primer production, and simplified activation for wood clear coats and light-colored topcoats to ensure film transparency.

3.3 High-Polarity Systems

Applicable systems: Ethyl acetate, methyl ethyl ketone, PMA, polyurethane and automotive refinish paints. Only high-shear self-activation dispersion is required without ethanol or methanol activation. The product can take effect directly after high-speed dispersion, maintaining clear coat transparency without causing haze.

4. Standard Dosage (Factory General, Weight Percentage)

The standard dosage range of Organo modified bentonite CP-34 is 0.2%-2.0%. Good dispersion can be achieved without heating. The recommended dosage for different coating systems is as follows:
  • Basic anti-settling scenarios (clear coats, light-colored topcoats): 0.2%โ€“0.5%
  • Conventional industrial paint scenarios (primers, anti-rust paints, general industrial paints): 0.5%โ€“1.2%
  • High-build & high-solid scenarios (high-build zinc-rich paints, heavy-duty anti-corrosion paints, unsaturated polyester putty): 1.2%โ€“2.0%

5. Activator Application Specification

organic bentonite CP-34 can be activated by high-shear dispersion, and optimal performance is achieved with polar activators without heating assistance. 95% ethanol or 95% methanol is adopted as the standard activator, with adjustable proportions for different systems:
  • General systems: Activator dosage accounts for 40%โ€“50% of CP-34 weight;
  • Xylene systems: Activator dosage accounts for 30%โ€“40% of CP-34 weight.

6. Two Standard Production Processes (Practical Operation Procedures)

Coating raw materials organoclay Bentonite

Process A: Pre-gel Method (Optimal Effect, Recommended for Heavy-Duty Anti-Corrosion & Zinc-Rich Paints)

Standard pre-gel mass ratio: 87% solvent + 10% organic bentonite CP-34 + 3%โ€“5% activator
Standard operation procedures:
  1. Add solvent into the dispersing kettle, and slowly sprinkle CP-34 powder under low-speed stirring at 1000 RPM;
  2. Adjust to high speed of 3000 RPM and disperse for 5โ€“10 minutes to fully wet and disperse the powder;
  3. Add the proportional polar activator and keep high-speed stirring for 10โ€“20 minutes to form a smooth and uniform gel;
  4. Add the prepared CP-34 pre-gel into the resin and filler system, then conduct grinding and tinting according to conventional processes.
Simplified pre-gel preparation process: Add solvent โ†’ Slowly add CP-34 (6%-10% of total pre-gel mass) under stirring โ†’ High-speed stir for 5 minutes โ†’ Add polar activator โ†’ High-speed stir for another 5 minutes to complete pre-gel preparation.

Process B: Direct Dry Powder Addition Method (Simplified Production & Improved Capacity)

  1. Put resin and mixed solvent into the dispersing kettle and start low-speed stirring;
  2. Slowly add modified montmorillonite CP-34 powder and stir at high speed for 15โ€“20 minutes to ensure complete powder dispersion;
  3. System adaptation rules: No additional activator is required for medium and high-polarity systems; polar activator supplementation is mandatory for pure aliphatic low-polarity systems to guarantee thixotropic and anti-settling performance;
  4. Add pigments and fillers after dispersion and proceed with conventional grinding procedures.

7. Core Application Performance

7.1 Superior Anti-Settling Performance, No Hard Sedimentation

Ideal for epoxy zinc-rich paints, iron oxide red anti-rust paints, heavy-duty anti-corrosion paints, metallic powder paints and other high-demand systems. It can stably lock coating fillers and pigments, preventing filler agglomeration within half a year of storage. The coating can return to a uniform state with gentle stirring, completely eliminating stubborn hard sediment at the bottom.

7.2 Excellent Anti-Sag Performance for Thick-Coat Construction

It effectively prevents film sagging during spray and brush coating for thick layers, enabling thicker single-coat application and reducing construction times to improve efficiency. Meanwhile, it maintains proper film leveling and avoids obvious brush marks and orange peel defects.

7.3 Reliable Thixotropic Thickening & Excellent Construction Feel๏ผšCoating raw materials organoclay Bentonite

The product features typical shear-thinning properties. It thickens at rest to lock powder and prevent settlement, and instantly thins under stirring and spraying shear to achieve uniform and fine atomization. It can rapidly recover viscosity after shear cessation, ensuring stable construction performance.

7.4 Improved Comprehensive Film Performance

It reduces coating penetration into wood and steel substrates to save raw material costs. Its flaky microstructure slightly enhances the anti-corrosion barrier performance of coating films without impairing the adhesion between primer and substrates, balancing protective effect and construction compatibility.

8. Main Application Fields

modified montmorillonite CP-34 is widely used in marine paints, industrial paints, heavy-duty anti-corrosion paints, asphalt coatings, polyester paints, alkyd paints, unsaturated polyester putty, sealants, inks, greases and other industrial products.
