Organoclay for Anti-Corrosion Coatings | Rheological Agent

Organoclay for Anti-Corrosion Coatings: Using our organobentonite CP-34 in anti-corrosion coatings enhances their anti-sagging properties and provides particularly outstanding anti-settling performance. Even during long-term storage, the coating remains resistant to delamination

Anti-settling organic bentonite CP-34 is mainly used in solvent-based anti-corrosion paints to significantly improve the thixotropy, rheological properties, suspension, and anti-sagging properties of the paint formulation, and to enhance gel strength.

  • Composition: Organic derivative of montmorillonite clay
  • Appearance: Fine light yellow powder
  • Moisture content (105℃, 2hr): ≤3.5%
  • Loss on ignition (1000℃): 28%–30%
  • Bulk density: 0.53 g/cm³
  • Fineness (<74μm): ≥98%

Q: What function does Organoclay CP-34 play in anti-corrosion paint? A: CP-34 works as a rheological additive. It stops heavy anti-corrosion pigments from hard sedimentation and avoids sagging during thick coating application. It also reinforces the final coating film.

Q: Can CP-34 be used in water-based anti-corrosion paint? A: No. CP-34 is developed exclusively for solvent-based systems.

Q: What polar activator is recommended for CP-34? A: 95% ethanol or 95% methanol is recommended as polar activator for pre-gel preparation.

Q: What type of coatings is CP-34 suitable for? A: It fits solvent-based anti-corrosion paint, marine paint, alkyd paint, bituminous coating, polyester paint and other industrial coating systems.

Organoclay CP-34 disperses under high shear conditions. A polar activator is required to achieve optimal rheological performance. Heating is not required to get good dispersion. Recommended dosage: 0.2% ~ 2.0% based on total formula weight. Recommended polar activator: 95% Ethanol or 95% Methanol

  • General solvent system: polar activator dosage at 40%~50% of CP-34 weight
  • Xylene solvent system: polar activator dosage at 30%~40% of CP-34 weight

Pre-gel Preparation Procedure

  1. Charge solvent into the grinding mill
  2. Slowly add CP-34 (6–10% of total pregel weight) under continuous agitation
  3. High-speed mixing for 5 minutes
  4. Add polar activator
  5. High-speed mixing for another 5 minutes
