Organoclay for White Mineral Oil and Low-Polarity Oil Systems
Organoclay is an organically modified bentonite designed to disperse in mineral oil and other non-aqueous systems. When properly dispersed under high shear, it develops a rheological structure that can increase viscosity, improve thixotropic behavior and help reduce the settling of suspended materials.
Weigh 243 g of No. 3 white mineral oil into a mixing cup and place the cup under a high-speed disperser. While mixing, gradually add 12 g of organoclay. Continue high-speed mixing for 5 minutes, with a tolerance of ยฑ0.5 minute.
Stop the mixer and remove the cup. Use a spatula to scrape all undispersed material from the cup wall and return it to the suspension. Place the cup back under the disperser and continue mixing for another 5 minutes. The total mixing time is 10 minutes, with a tolerance of ยฑ1 minute. Conduct the test at 25ยฐC.
Rheological Measurement|Organoclay for White Mineral Oil
Transfer the prepared suspension into the sample cup of a six-speed rotational viscometer up to the marked level. Gently move the cup from side to side for 15โ20 seconds to release entrapped air.
Place the sample cup on the instrument platform and raise it until the liquid level reaches the reference line on the outer cylinder. Measure the suspension from high speed to low speed. Allow the dial reading to stabilize at each speed and record the corresponding value. Conduct all measurements at 25ยฐC.
