Organoclay KP-40 has good viscosity and thickening properties over a wide temperature range. The rheological additive KP-40 is an organoclay (modified bentonite) designed specifically for use in solvent-based systems. It can be used widely in solvents ranging from low polarity to high polarity.

KP-40 organoclay thickeners disperse under high shears and require a polar activator for optimal efficiency. Good heat dispersion is essential. Addition levels are typically 0.2% to 2.0%. A polar activator (95% ethanol or 95% methanol) is required. A typical recommended addition level is 45% to 60% of KP-40 by weight. If the system contains xylene, the addition level is approximately 30% to 40% of KP-40 by weight.
Pre-gel is made as per below procedure.
1. The duty solvent that needs to be milled
2. Slowly add KP-40 (6-10% by weight of full pre-gel) to the mill while agitated.
3. Mix on high speed for 5 minutes.
4. Add a polar activator.
5. Mix on high speed for 5 minutes.
