Organoclay for Drilling Mud
Typically, bentonite or montmorillonite is modified with quaternary ammonium salts to give the resulting organobentonite oleophilic (organophilic) properties. These organoclay thickeners and gelling agents are widely used in various thickening drilling fluids, such as oil-based drilling fluids, reverse emulsion drilling fluids, workover fluids, completion fluids, casing filling fluids, packer fluids, and make-up fluids.
In the industrial sector, organobentonite is used as a rheology modifier in the preparation of oil-based drilling fluids, lubricants, and cosmetics. It is also used in paints and coatings. Organobentonite is essential for the preparation of organic drilling fluids and is a key additive (suspending agent).
Organoclays possess the ability to dissolve and grow in organic media, as well as high-temperature stability and good rheological properties. Notably, the interlayer cations in clay are replaced by alkylamine cations, giving it excellent dispersibility and filtration properties in the oil phase. Therefore, it is also used in some wastewater and waste treatment applications.
Rheology Modifier is an organoclay for oil-based drilling mud (fluid)
Application
Viscosifying drilling Fluids:
- Oil based drilling fluids
- Invert emulsion fluids(oil as the continuous phase, water as the dispersed phase)
- Workover fluids
- All-oil systems
- Completion fluids
- Casing packs
- Packer fluids
- Spotting fluids
We recommend adding the powder directly to the base oil and mixing it using high-speed shearing to quickly disperse and activate the formulation. Adding a certain amount of a polar activator will further enhance the effect. Commonly recommended polar activators include methanol, ethanol, and propylene carbonate.

- Organo-Montmorillonite (OMMT)
OMMT is the most widely used rheological additive in oil-based drilling fluids. It offers excellent swelling capacity, strong thixotropy, and broad compatibility with diesel, mineral oil, and synthetic oil systems. It is suitable for most conventional oilfield drilling applications. - Organo-Sepiolite (OSEP)
OSEP is designed for high-temperature drilling environments, performing reliably up to 180 °C. Its unique fibrous crystal structure provides outstanding thermal stability and shear resistance, preventing performance degradation under extreme downhole temperatures. - Organo-Palygorskite (OPAL)
OPAL is optimized for drilling operations in high-salinity environments, such as offshore fields with saltwater intrusion. It maintains stable rheological properties in high-salt systems, resists flocculation, and ensures effective suspension of cuttings and weighting agents. - Na-Based Organo-Bentonite (Sodium Organobentonite)
Derived from sodium bentonite, this type disperses rapidly in base oils and exhibits strong gel-forming and suspension capabilities. It effectively prevents solid particle sedimentation and enhances overall drilling fluid stability. - Ca-Based Organo-Bentonite (Calcium Organobentonite)
Modified from calcium bentonite, this cost-effective option is suitable for medium-temperature and medium-salinity drilling conditions. Organic modification improves its dispersion and provides basic rheological control for low- to medium-complexity drilling operations. - HTHP-Grade Organoclays (High-Temperature / High-Pressure)
These organoclays are formulated for ultra-deep wells exceeding 6000 m, where downhole temperatures surpass 200 °C and pressures exceed 100 MPa. Modified with high-temperature-resistant surfactants, they deliver long-term stability in viscosity, gel strength, and fluid loss control under extreme HTHP conditions.
- Rheology Control – Provides reliable control of viscosity and gel strength for stable drilling-fluid performance.
- Viscosifying & Gelling – Increases viscosity and gel structure to suspend barite and drill cuttings when circulation stops.
- Hole Cleaning – Enhances carrying capacity, improving the transport of cuttings out of the wellbore.
- Fluid Loss Reduction – Forms a thin, low-permeability filter cake that minimises fluid invasion into formations.
- Emulsion Stabilisation – Improves stability of invert emulsions (water-in-oil), ensuring consistent performance in oil-based muds.
- Thermal Stability – Maintains rheological properties under high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) drilling conditions.
- Improved Suspension Efficiency – Ensures uniform suspension of solids and reduces barite sag in dynamic and static conditions.
- Enhanced Lubricity – Contributes to smoother drilling operations by lowering torque and drag on the drill string.
- Density Stability – Helps maintain consistent mud weight by keeping weighting materials well-dispersed.
- Support During Tripping – Provides necessary gel strength to suspend cuttings during pipe trips and prevent cuttings beds.
