Organo bentonite is a highly effective, gel – forming organophilic clay composed of amontmorillonite clay reacted with

a high purity organic compound.  Rheological additive is used to economically increase viscosity in oil – base mud systems.

2, Advantages

4, Using

Organoclay CP-169 disperses under high shear and requires a polar activator (30%~40%) for best efficiency. Heat is not required to obtain good dispersion. Addition levels are typically in 0.2%~2.0%. Polar activator (95% Ethanol or 95% Methanol) is needed. Normally addition level of polar activator is recommended to be 30%~40% of CP-169 in weight.

Rheology Modifier organoclay CP-138Y is an treated oil based bentonite clay. Rheological additive is an economical organobentonite viscosifier and suspending agent for oil–based muds, invert emulsion muds,completion fluids and workover fluids. Organophilic clay is suitable for drilling fluids based on diesel oil , Synthetic oil and mineral oil. Modified bentonite adds to the formulation the temperature stable rheology characteristic of organoclay .

4, Using

It can be added directly in powder under high shear condition. Addition level is commonly 0.1%~1.0% of total formulation by weight. Polar activator is required to achieve better performance. The addition procedure is suggested as below.

  • Add resin in solvent.
  • Add CP-138Y under slow agitation.
  • Disperse under high speed for 10-15 minutes.
  • Add polar activator.
  • Disperse under high speed for 10-15 minutes.
  • Add wetting agent and other additive.
  • Grinding and next procedure.

If to make pre-gel, better efficiency can be achieved. Addition level in pre-gel is 5%-8% of total pre-gel in weight. Pre-gel procedure is as below.

  • Add solvent or solvent mixture.
  • Add CP-138Y under slow agitation.
  • Disperse under high speed for 5-10 minutes.
  • Add polar activator.
  • Disperse under high speed for 5-10 minutes.

Polar activator is suggested to be ethanol/water (95/5), methanol/water (95/5) or acetone. Dosage of polar activator is as below.
