Organoclay bentonite also named organically modified bentonite clay.it’s a typically quaternary alkylammonium ions, an organophilic surface is generated.

organoclay applications,it can be used to paints,coatings,inks and grease lubricanting. It is also applied as a component in drilling formulations or as a viscosifier for oil-based drilling mud and fracturing fluids.

Organoclay , here mainly means organic bentonite or hectorite clay is inorganic minerals. After it is modified by quaternary ammonium salt or other organic compound, it become amine treated bentonite clay which can be dispersed in organic solvent.

Due to its perfect thickening,dispersion and rheology in solvent, it is widely used as rheology additive to effect anti-sag and anti-settling in paints and coatings formulations.

First, let ’s introduce how to choose the right organoclay in paints and coatings.

Every factory may have several Organoclay bentonite grades for customers to select. Different source of organoclay plus various ammonium and manufacturing technology give many grades of organoclay rheological additive.

How to choose a proper grade of organoclay bentonite additive for your paint formulation?

Below we list 5 factors for you to make a correct option.
1.Organoclay is thickener bentonite in paint and coating formulation. But too high viscosity or too low viscosity is not good for paint and coatings. So, a grade of organoclay with proper thickening ability is suitable for your paint formulation.

2.To make pre-gel, or add thixotropic agent directly in powder? If your manufacturing procedure includes pre-gel, you can select a conventional grade; but if your producing procedure requires to add organic bentonite clay directly in powder, you should select an easy-dispersing grade.

3.Polar activator. Normally, in low and medium solvents or solvent mixture, polar activator is required for conventional grades of organoclay rheological additive to help dispersing. Even for some easy-dispersing grades of organoclay, a small dosage of polar activator is helpful for rheological additive to optimize best performance

4.Which solvent is used in your formulation? 

Each solvent has solvent polarity, non-polarity, or low polarity,or medium polarity or high polarity. Each grade of organoclay has its suitable polarity range of solvent.

For example, CP-180 and CP-10 are suitable for low polaritysolvent; and CP-27 and CP-27A are suitable for medium to high polarity. Customer may read TDS of organoclay to know its suitable polarity range and then select correct grade for your formulation.

5.Some paints,coatings, like finishing, gloss paint, have very high requirement for particle fineness. In this case, you must choose a grade of organoclay treated organobentonite with high dispersing fineness. Customers can check organoclay’s dispersing particle size and select a grade with enough particle fineness.

Grease with our organoclay bentonite can produce high temperature resistance. it gives improved metal adhesion and bleed resistance. And It effects good working stability and water resistance to the greases. The basic oils grease will determine which types of our organoclay should be selected.

  • Organoclay CP-250A designed especially for using in Grease based on synthetic oils | Mineral oil | Medium,high viscosity lubricating oil.
  • Organoclay CP-40 designed especially for using in Grease based on Diesel Oils.
  • Organobentonite CP-MP is designed especially for using in Grease based on Mineral oil.

Organoclay For Oil Drilling Fluids
For organoclay used in drilling mud. Considering different rheological conditions and depth of a oil drilling well, Oil drilling company may choose different oil for drilling fluid, such as diesel, mineral oil, synthetic oil and crude oil.

Normally, our CP-2S,CP-180,CP-169, CP-EZ and CP982 are recommended for diesel, and CP-250A,CP-01,CP-03,CP-04 and CP992 can be applied  in not only diesel, but also in synthetic oil, mineral oil and crude oil.

* Organoclay CP169 is a economical grade for diesel. Its performance can be enhanced when polar activator in moderation is added. So, especially it is recommended for water-in-oil drilling fluid because small dosage of water can act as polar activator.

*Organophilic clay CP-EZ and CP-982 are self activated grades and can be disperse without polar activator. They are recommended when diesel based drilling fluid contain no water or other external polar activator.
A small amount of water (0.1 0.2% by weight  of total formula) added to mud further speeds the gelation process and optimizes organoclay use

*CP-250A and cp-992 have better temperature stability and gelation efficiency in not only diesel, but also synthetic oil, mineral oil and crude oil. They effect rapid dispersibility and contribute initial viscosity,and require no external polar activator.
Organoclay CP- 250A has better YP value and temperature stability than CP-992.

Incorporation procedure for Water-borne grades

Water-borne Rheological Additive neither need to produce pre-gel nor add polar

activator, the addition process is as follows

1.Water(PH7.0-8.0)

  1. Slowly add water-borne organoclay bentonite,disperse in high speed for 20-30minutes
  2. Additive(film forming additive, deformer, fungicide, dispersant, etc.)
  3. Pigment
  4. Latex
  5. Dilute

Organoclay easy dispersing grades

Modified Bentonite Organoclay is a treated armin bentonite. Rheological additive include easy dispersing grades and pre-gel grades.

Incorporation Procedure for easy dispersing grades:

  1. Charge solvent or solvent mixture)to mill
  2. Slowly addOrganoclay(0. 2%-2% in weight) to mill under agitation
  3. Mix at high speed for 5 minutes
  4. Add polar activator
  5. Mix at high speed for 5 minutes

Incorporation procedure for pre-gel grades

Organoclays are pre-gel grades for which polar activator and pre-gel are necessary

Procedure of making gel:

(1)Charge 85-87% solvent (or solvent mixture)to mill

(2)Slowly add organoclay (6-10% by weight of total pregel) to mill under agitation

(3mixat high speed for 5 minutes

(4),Add polar actnvator 3-5%

(5),Mix at high speed for 5 minutes

Addition of pre-gel

A For poor wetting capacity resin system (epoxy, polyester, short-oil alkyd, acrylic resin, etc.) and non-thixotropic grind materials, use in combination with surfactant, the addition process is as follows:

a . Charge resin and solvents(mix)

b. Wetting ( if required

c. Pigment

d Disperse to desired fineness with grinding

e Rheological additive pre-gel

Disperse completely to desired fineness

g,Dilute to desired viscosity

B For poor wetting resin system, use surfactant and can develop thixotropy structure under shear . the addition process is as follows

a Charge resin and solvents(mix)

b Rheological additive pre-gel

c Surfactant

d Pigment

Dilute to desired viscosity

Important note:

  • Suitable dosage of polar activator is very important to dispersion of organoclay and stabilit
  • Polar activator should be added only after addition of organoclay, and organoclay has been fully wetted and dispersed
  • For poor wetting resin systems(epoxy, polyester, short-oil alkyd, acrylic resin, etc.) organoclay should be used in combination with surfactant
  • system. Too much polar activator will reduce swelling once again and viscosity would drop down again. See following chart 1
